How baccarat works
Two hands are dealt, Player and Banker. You bet on which will total closer to nine, or on a tie. Cards two to nine count face value, tens and pictures zero, aces one. Only the last digit of the total counts, so 15 is five. Drawing rules are fixed, so there is nothing to decide after the bet.
Banker wins slightly more often, so the casino takes 5% commission on banker wins. Even after commission, banker at 1.06% house edge is the best bet on the table. Tie pays 8:1 but carries a 14% edge.
How to play baccarat
Four steps, no decisions after the bet.
- Bet Player, Banker or Tie
Side bets such as Player Pair and Dragon Bonus are optional and carry higher edges.
- Two cards each
A natural eight or nine ends the round immediately.
- Third card rules
Player draws on five or less. Banker draws by a fixed table depending on the player’s third card. The dealer handles all of it.
- Closest to nine wins
Banker wins pay 0.95:1 after commission, player wins 1:1, tie 8:1.
