How blackjack works
You and the dealer each receive cards. The goal is a hand closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. Number cards count face value, picture cards ten, aces one or eleven. A two-card 21 is a blackjack and pays 3:2 at good tables.
Unlike slots or roulette, your choices matter. Hitting, standing, doubling and splitting according to basic strategy is the difference between a 0.5% house edge and 2% or more. Rule variations such as 6:5 payouts or dealer hitting soft 17 push the edge back up.
How to play a hand
Five decisions in every round.
- Place your bet
Live tables seat seven. If the table is full, bet behind another player.
- Receive two cards
The dealer shows one card face up. That card decides most of your strategy.
- Hit or stand
Hit to take a card, stand to keep your total. Bust over 21 and you lose immediately.
- Double or split
Double your bet for one more card on strong totals. Split pairs into two hands, always aces and eights.
- Dealer plays
The dealer draws to 17 by fixed rules. No decisions, so you can always predict their play.
