Unknown football fact: Football players spit during the game
Actually, these football players are not spitting at someone or the opposing team, they are actually spitting the carbohydrate solution. And in fact, it is a very common action among the athletes and football players.
Carb Rinsing
This spitting action is known as Carb Rinsing, where the players spit carbohydrate solutions instead of drinking the drinking carb solutions. And that is why it is called carb rinsing, indicating the athletes or the football players are just rinsing the solution in mouth. Several studies have shown that drinking carb solutions can lead to gastrointestinal issues. When players rinse their mouths with sweet carb solutions, the receptors in the mouth send signals to the brain, suggesting that there is energy on the way, the body gets the signal and continues to function. And so the football players get refreshed and boosted athletic performance.
MUC5B
Another explanation is a mucus called MUC5B will be generated while exercising, and this mucus makes saliva thicker and hard to swallow. Hence, athletes will spit it out to get rid of this discomfort feeling.
Spitting Ban
However, according to IFAB Laws of the Game 2022-23, physical or aggressive behavior, including bites or spits at someone on the team lists or a match official is considered the fouls and misconduct action and could lead to yellow cards.
Famous Spitting Incidents
One of the most iconic spitting incidents in football will be the match between Germany and Netherlands during the World Cup Italia, where Frank Rijkaard initially aimed his spit at Rudi Voller.
Another incident is when Christina Ronaldo failed to hold his anger and spit at the Welshman, during the 2009 FA Cup.
